The significance of donning the Poppy is emphasized to Canadians by the Royal Canadian Legion every November: "Thanks to the millions of Canadians who wear the Legion’s lapel Poppy each November, the little red flower has never died, and the memories of those who fell in battle remain strong."
According to the Legion, poppies should be worn from the last Friday of October until November 11. On Remembrance Day, some people decide to take off their poppies at the end of the day. Some choose to lay them on a wreath or cenotaph after a commemorative ceremony as a symbol of respect. Wearing a poppy during other times of the year to pay respects to fallen veterans is not considered inappropriate.
Not sure how to wear a Poppy pin correctly? Wearing the poppy respectfully over the heart on the left side is advised by the Royal Canadian Legion. As per their proper Poppy Protocol, the Legion's lapel poppy is a sacred sign of Remembrance and should not be affixed with any pin that obstructs it completely. It should then be stored or disposed of respectfully.
Although poppies are always free, donations to the Poppy Fund, which directly helps Canada's veterans and their families in need, are gladly accepted by the Legion.
