Fans of the annual Quebec Cup regatta for adapted sailing competitors is only two weeks away. Two days of competition await you on July 29 and 30, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club (1, avenue Cartier, Pointe-Claire, H9S 4R3).
Every year since 2000, the Association québécoise de voile adaptée (AQVA) gathers sailors from across Canada and the United States to compete for the Cup. The competition is all in good fun and impressive to see live.
Adapted sailing is a wonderful recreational activity that allows individuals with disabilities to experience the joy of sailing. Pointe Claire Yacht Club offers a beautiful setting for this activity.
"Two fleets (silver and gold) will compete in their respective categories on the waters of Lac St-Louis. The Quebec Cup welcomes sailors with various disabilities, reflecting the AQVA's mission to make sailing accessible to all," according to AQVA.
Adapted sailing programs typically provide specialized equipment and trained instructors who can assist individuals with various disabilities to participate in sailing activities. The programs often include adapted boats, such as accessible sailboats or boats equipped with modifications to accommodate different mobility needs.
Participating in adapted sailing can provide a unique and empowering experience, allowing individuals with disabilities to enjoy the freedom of being on the water and engage in a challenging and fulfilling recreational activity. It can also promote social interaction, build confidence, and improve physical and mental well-being.
If you or someone you know is interested in participating in adapted sailing in Pointe Claire, I recommend reaching out to local organizations, sailing clubs, or community centers in the area. They can provide information about upcoming programs, registration processes, and any specific requirements or accessibility features available. It's always a good idea to inquire about any necessary qualifications, age restrictions, or equipment needs to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
