For artists who belong to a social group that has often been marginalized, it is unsurprising that the Three Way Mirror queer collective, composed of the talented individuals Daniel Barrow, Glenn Gear, and Paige Gratland, is drawn to similarly marginalized crafts. These art forms are not only aesthetically engaging but also deeply intertwined with personal narratives and political statements, such as hand-drawn animation, which allows for a unique storytelling medium; sewing, which can serve as a metaphor for mending both fabric and community; weaving, an ancient craft that symbolizes interconnectedness; leatherwork, which reflects both durability and artistry; beading, often linked to cultural heritage; and paper dolls, which can express identity and transformation. Each of these crafts carries with it a rich history and a potential for social commentary, making them particularly resonant for artists who aim to highlight the voices and experiences of those who have been overlooked or marginalized in mainstream society.

At Stewart Hall Art Gallery, the Three Way Mirror collective will create a queer craft “triangle,” a dynamic and interactive space that will not only function as a production studio where the artists can generate an evolving exhibition but will also act as a vital touchstone for community engagement. This triangle will serve multiple purposes: it will be a hub for outreach initiatives, fostering connections among attendees through conversation and workshops designed to educate and inspire. The collective aims to create a welcoming atmosphere where individuals from all backgrounds can come together to explore their creativity, share their stories, and engage in meaningful dialogue about identity, art, and the importance of representation in the arts. The workshops will encourage participants to experiment with various crafts, allowing them to express their own identities and experiences through hands-on activities, ultimately fostering a sense of belonging and community.
