Major Change for Accessible Transport in Montreal

The STM has announced that by 2026, it will phase out its minibus service for people with disabilities and transition entirely to a collective taxi model. This change aims to save $145 million while ensuring continued accessibility for all users.

Currently, 90% of adapted transport trips are already handled by collective taxis. The STM believes this transition will provide a more flexible and efficient service. However, the decision has sparked concerns among users and unions, who question the quality of driver training and the impact on mobility for people with disabilities.

This move is part of a broader effort by the STM to review its operating costs and reduce recurring expenses. Additional changes may be announced in the coming months to optimize vehicle maintenance and service procurement.
