The Vaudreuil-Dorion municipal library is giving away one free pair of solar glasses per citizen (while supplies last) starting Tuesday, April 2.
These glasses will allow residents to safely view the total solar eclipse taking place on April 8 in southern Quebec. This is a rare event where the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light for a brief period of time. It's an extraordinary astronomical occurrence that many consider a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The last total eclipse visible from Montreal occurred in 1932, and we don't anticipate another one for at least 80 years.
There are several places where you can buy solar eclipse glasses. Some online retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy sell them. You can also check with your local astronomy club, planetarium, science museum, or university. It's important to make sure that the glasses meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard to ensure that they provide adequate protection for your eyes during the solar eclipse.
