The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility informs road users that work to reopen additional lanes on the current Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge will continue throughout the winter. At this time, no increase in load capacity on the bridge is possible.
The reopening of a fourth lane was initially planned before the end of 2024. However, some beams in the Senneville area have continued to deteriorate. To safely reopen another lane, shoring work underway since last summer must advance further. Specifically, interventions on both sides of one of the two piers currently under repair must be completed first.
Three lanes remain available for road users on the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge. Unless temporarily adjusted due to weather conditions, two of the three lanes will remain open during the following times:
• Toward Montreal: Midnight to 10:00 a.m. on weekdays, excluding holidays.
• Toward Vaudreuil-Dorion: Noon to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, all day on weekends and holidays, and from December 25 to January 2 inclusively.
To minimize impacts, the Ministry is funding additional mitigation measures, including discounts and expanded public transit services in the area.
Since November 16, buses have also been permitted to use the eastbound shoulder of Highway 40 to bypass congestion and reach the bridge more efficiently. These public transit measures will remain in place until further notice.
Based on current analyses and work progress, a fourth lane will reopen once shoring work on both sides of a pier in the Senneville area is completed, which is now anticipated before the end of winter.
Additional work has already been completed:
• Reinforcement work in the center of the bridge (spans 15 to 17), on the northern side of the structure, was finished as planned before the end of the year.
• Most of the required pavement markings for the fourth lane reopening were completed in November under favorable weather conditions.
As part of the ongoing work on the current structure and the new bridge construction, weekend closures of Highway 40 between Vaudreuil-Dorion and Senneville will be required over the coming months. These closures will be announced in advance.
