Quebec Expands Bottle Return Program: What You Need to Know

As of March 1, 2025, Quebec’s bottle deposit system has undergone a major expansion, making it easier for residents to recycle and earn refunds. A 10-cent deposit now applies to all plastic bottles between 100 millilitres and two litres, extending beyond the previous system, which only covered soft drink bottles. This change is expected to bring 1.2 billion additional plastic containers into the recycling stream each year.

What’s New?

Previously, only soft drink bottles were eligible for a refund. Now, a wide range of plastic beverage containers—including water, juice, iced tea, sports drinks, and more—fall under the deposit program. The goal is to increase recycling rates, reduce plastic waste, and encourage consumers to return their bottles rather than discard them.

Why the Change?

This expansion is part of Quebec’s broader environmental strategy to promote a circular economy. By including more types of containers, the province aims to reduce landfill waste, cut down on litter, and improve the efficiency of the recycling system. When bottles are returned, they can be processed into new plastic products, reducing the need for virgin materials.

How It Works

  • When you purchase a qualifying plastic beverage bottle, you’ll pay an extra 10 cents per container.

  • Return your empty bottles to designated drop-off locations, including grocery stores, depots, and participating retailers.

  • Receive your 10-cent refund per bottle—it’s that simple!

  • A full list of returnable containers can be found online or at participating retailers.

The Bigger Picture

Recycling initiatives like this help tackle plastic pollution and encourage responsible consumption. With the new system in place, consumers are incentivized to return bottles, preventing them from ending up in landfills, waterways, or as litter on streets.

Quebec joins other provinces in modernizing its deposit-return system, aligning with national efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability. By participating, residents not only get their deposit back but also contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

Get Involved

Start collecting your bottles today and make the most of this new refund opportunity! Whether you’re an individual, a school, or a business, returning bottles is an easy way to support environmental efforts while putting a little money back in your pocket.
