Dorval, May 28, 2021 – Great news: The Dorval Library will be abolishing late fine fees as of June 1!
The Library joins the international "Fine Free Library" movement, born in the United States, which aims to promote access to culture and knowledge for all. In Quebec, 27% of public libraries have joined the movement since 2019 and the number of memberships has been increasing steadily.
It is important to note, however, that late fees registered before June 1 will still be applicable and must be paid.
A study conducted by the Association des bilbiothèques publiques du Québec has shown that late fees imposed for documents not returned on time constitute an economic barrier that can hinder access to libraries by minors and disadvantaged clienteles. The Dorval Library is a place that values social inclusion and, by this action, wants to contribute to the democratization of library access and to encourage access to cultural, artistic, and educational collections.
A library without fees is not a library without rules
It goes without saying that it is important to respect the due date of loans in order to make the documents available to all members. Having overdue items will prevent members from borrowing new materials and late notices will continue to be sent to late borrowers. As well, fees for lost or damaged materials will be maintained. Finally, to encourage the return of materials on due dates, courtesy notices will continue to be sent.
The abolition of late fees is supported by the Association des bibliothèques publiques du Québec. To learn more about this movement, visit https://abpq.ca
