Lachine Residents Relocated to Hotel Due to Fire Risk in Their Building

A group of about thirty residents in Lachine has been temporarily relocated to a hotel after an inspection by the Montreal Housing Service and the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) revealed fire hazards in their building, which had recently been vandalized.

Lachine Mayor Maja Vodanovic announced the emergency measure on social media on Friday, stating that the Montreal Municipal Housing Office (OMHM) is working to find them suitable permanent housing.

This situation comes amid growing concerns about housing safety and habitability in Lachine. In January 2025, borough officials had to intervene urgently in a 47-unit building on Ivan-Franko Street, where tenants had been without heating for nearly two months due to the owner’s failure to comply with city-issued citations. At the time, Mayor Vodanovic stated that the city had hired professionals to carry out necessary repairs, with plans to charge the costs to the owner—and seize the property if payment was not made.

The recent evacuation highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring safe and adequate housing for Lachine residents. Authorities have not yet disclosed a timeline for when permanent housing solutions will be found for the displaced residents.
