Thieves Steal Over $1 Million Worth of Olive Oil in a Well-Orchestrated Heist
In a bold and carefully planned operation, thieves posing as legitimate truck drivers made off with over $1 million worth of olive oil from a business in Lachine, Montreal last week.
The company had posted an ad looking for a transport service to ship 100 pallets of olive oil to Toronto. A transport company responded, and on Monday and Tuesday, four semi-trucks arrived at the warehouse on Joseph-Dubreuil Street to pick up the cargo. However, the shipment never reached its destination.
It took the company over 24 hours to realize they had been scammed, at which point they alerted the Montreal Police (SPVM).
A Common Tactic in Cargo Theft
With olive oil prices skyrocketing in recent years, high-value shipments like this have become prime targets for organized crime.
According to former SPVM organized crime detective Daniel Picard, this type of fraud follows a classic pattern:
➡️ Criminals set up fake transport companies with real-looking credentials.
➡️ They win contracts to move goods by offering competitive rates.
➡️ They use stolen or disguised trucks to collect the cargo.
➡️ Instead of delivering it, they disappear with the shipment—and within months, their “company” vanishes too.
Police have since located at least one of the stolen trailers, but no arrests have been made.
