Hudson’s Bay in Pointe-Claire Among Six Stores Spared from Liquidation—for Now

After weeks of uncertainty, Hudson’s Bay has announced that its Pointe-Claire store will remain open—at least temporarily—as the struggling retailer fights to restructure its business. The Pointe-Claire location, inside Fairview Mall, is one of just six stores across Canada that will be spared from the company’s massive liquidation sale, set to begin this week.

The news offers a glimmer of hope for employees and shoppers in the West Island. With Hudson’s Bay filing for creditor protection on March 7, many feared the end of an era for one of Canada’s most historic retailers. The company had initially planned to liquidate all of its stores, but stronger-than-expected sales have allowed it to keep a small number of locations operational while searching for a long-term solution.

Alongside the Pointe-Claire store, the other locations set to stay open for now include the flagship Hudson’s Bay on Yonge Street in Toronto, the Yorkdale Mall and Hillcrest Mall stores in Ontario, and two additional Quebec locations—one in downtown Montreal and another at Carrefour Laval.

What This Means for Pointe-Claire Shoppers

While the Pointe-Claire store is safe for now, its future remains uncertain. The company has indicated that unless a viable restructuring plan is found soon, these remaining locations may still face liquidation. Hudson’s Bay’s lawyer, Ashley Taylor, emphasized in court that the retailer is on borrowed time, stating that a swift financial turnaround is necessary to keep these stores open beyond June 30.

For West Island residents, this means continued access to a longstanding shopping destination, but with an uncertain timeline. The company has yet to announce how deep the discounts will be at the stores remaining open, though liquidation at the other locations is set to continue until June 15.

The Bigger Picture

Hudson’s Bay has faced mounting challenges, including declining consumer spending, reduced foot traffic in post-pandemic shopping districts, and financial struggles stemming from deferred payments to landlords and suppliers. Despite being Canada’s oldest retailer, the company has struggled to adapt to a rapidly changing retail landscape dominated by e-commerce.

For now, Pointe-Claire’s Hudson’s Bay remains a part of the community, but West Islanders should take advantage of it while they still can. Whether the store remains a staple at Fairview Mall or follows the fate of its shuttered counterparts will depend on what happens in the coming weeks.
