As conversation over language comes once again to the forefront in Montreal, cities across the West Island that have been granted and proudly maintained bilingual status over the years are wondering how the proposed Bill 96 may affect them.
The bill, which "respects French as the official and common language of Québec" has municipalities questioning how they plan to move forward. The city of Kirkland released a statement emphasizing the importance of bilingualism and its long-standing history with both French and English.
The statement highlighted its leaders over the years and their willingness to support both French and English in its institutions, services, and its civilians.
The Kirkland City Council is reassuring residents that it will vouge for continued bilingual status in all its facets as the proposed bill moves forward and evolves.
