Canadian Dental Care Plan Expands: Eligible Adults Aged 18-64 Can Apply Starting May 1

Writer: Carey TateCarey Tate

Starting May 1, 2025, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will expand to include eligible adults aged 18 to 64, marking a significant milestone in Canada’s commitment to accessible oral health care. This expansion aims to provide comprehensive dental coverage to millions of Canadians who previously lacked access to essential dental services.

Application Schedule:

To ensure a smooth enrollment process, applications will open in phases based on age groups:

   •   May 1, 2025: Ages 55 to 64

   •   May 15, 2025: Ages 18 to 34

   •   May 29, 2025: Ages 35 to 54

This staggered approach is designed to manage application volumes effectively and provide timely support to all applicants.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the CDCP, applicants must meet the following requirements:

   •   No Access to Dental Insurance: Applicants should not have dental coverage through employers, pension plans, or any other private insurance.

   •   Tax Filing: Applicants must have filed their individual 2024 tax return in Canada. If applicable, their spouse or common-law partner should also have filed their 2024 tax return.

   •   Income Threshold: Applicants should have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.

   •   Residency: Applicants must be Canadian residents for tax purposes.

These criteria ensure that the program benefits those who need it most, particularly individuals and families without existing dental coverage and within the specified income bracket.

Application Process:

Eligible Canadians can apply for the CDCP through the following methods:

   •   Online: The primary and most convenient method is through the official government portal at Canada.ca/dental.

   •   By Phone: Applicants can call the designated helpline for assistance with the application process.

   •   In Person: Applications can be submitted by visiting a local Service Canada Centre.

Applicants are encouraged to use the online portal for a faster and more streamlined experience.

Coverage Details:

The CDCP offers a comprehensive range of dental services, including:

   •   Preventive Care: Services such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants.

   •   Diagnostic Services: Examinations and X-rays.

   •   Restorative Services: Fillings and crowns.

   •   Endodontic Services: Root canal treatments.

   •   Prosthodontic Services: Provision of dentures.

   •   Periodontal Services: Treatment for gum diseases.

   •   Oral Surgery: Extractions and other minor surgical procedures.

Some services may require preauthorization. Applicants are advised to consult the CDCP Dental Benefits Guide for detailed information on covered services and any necessary approvals.

Renewal Process for Current Members:

Current CDCP members are reminded to renew their coverage to ensure uninterrupted access to dental services:

   •   Tax Filing Requirement: Members must have filed their 2024 tax return and received their 2024 Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency.

   •   Renewal Deadline: Renewal applications should be submitted by June 1, 2025, to prevent any lapse in coverage.

   •   Consequences of Non-Renewal: Failure to renew by the deadline will result in coverage termination on June 30, 2025. Services received during any coverage gap will not be eligible for reimbursement.

Members can renew their coverage through the online portal at Canada.ca/dental, via their My Service Canada Account (MSCA), or by telephone.

Government’s Commitment:

Health Minister Kamal Khera emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating that it represents a substantial advancement in enhancing the health and well-being of millions across the country. Access to affordable dental care is vital for Canadians, leading to better health outcomes, reducing barriers to care, and alleviating pressure on the healthcare system. This expansion is made possible through the continued support and participation of oral health providers nationwide.

For more detailed information on eligibility, application procedures, and coverage specifics, Canadians are encouraged to visit the official CDCP website at Canada.ca/dental.

The expansion of the CDCP underscores Canada’s dedication to ensuring that all citizens have access to essential dental care, promoting overall health and quality of life.
