Bridging Borders with Potholes Across America and Canada

Writer: Carey TateCarey Tate

Potholes turn ordinary roads into unpredictable terrains, hiding beneath puddles and adding unexpected twists to daily commutes.

They are a growing problem across North America, from Montreal’s frost-heaved streets to Rhode Island’s rugged roads. The result is a costly aftermath of blown tires, bent rims, and repair bills.

This shared frustration has united drivers on both sides of the border as they navigate crumbling infrastructure and mounting expenses. But the true cost of these treacherous cavities extends beyond vehicle damage, impacting public safety, traffic flow, and even local economies.

As potholes multiply, so does the urgency to find lasting solutions to this growing menace.

Montreal’s Record-Breaking Pothole Problem

Montreal’s famously rough roads reached new heights of infamy in 2022, Global News reports. The city saw a record number of pothole damage claims, highlighting the ongoing struggles with its road infrastructure

Over 1,000 claims were filed, but only 256 were approved, costing Montreal $103,157 in compensation. It was the most spent in five years. According to Hugo Bourgoin, a city spokesperson, road conditions have been deteriorating rapidly, leading to escalating repair costs.

Blue-collar workers filled nearly 97,000 potholes across the city that year, costing $2.8 million. However, due to unusually warm winter temperatures, the city anticipated even more potholes in the coming months.

Sadly, these worries were justified, as reported by CTV News. In 2024, the City of Montreal reported a staggering 60% increase in pothole complaints compared to the previous year. The problem is worsening, and the city is struggling to keep up.

The Pothole Capitals of the U.S.

Across the border in the U.S., Rhode Island has earned the dubious title of “The Pothole State.” With 23.4 pothole-related tweets per 1,000 km of road, it beats Hawaii. Social media is filled with complaints, with locals jokingly reminiscing about the state’s pothole legacy, AOL reports.

Hawaii follows closely with 20.6 pothole tweets per 1,000 km. Residents humorously describe dodging potholes while enjoying the island's scenic views.

In California, the pothole problem is just as severe, as reported by CBS News. Between 2018 and mid-2023, Caltrans received 30,000 damage claims due to potholes and other hazards. In 2023 alone, damage claims tripled compared to the previous five years.

Legal Battles and Financial Costs

Potholes don’t just damage vehicles; they can also lead to serious injuries and legal battles. Such legal disputes are becoming more common. Drivers are seeking compensation for medical bills, vehicle repairs, and other damages caused by poorly maintained roads.

While some states are offering avenues for reimbursement, there are still limitations.

In Illinois, for example, if you hit a pothole in southwestern cities like Belleville or Edwardsville, you might get reimbursement. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has accepted claims for vehicle damage caused by potholes on state highways for over 40 years. However, claims must meet specific requirements, such as prior notice of the pothole and time for IDOT to make repairs.

Even after you submit a claim, the process can take 90 to 120 days to resolve. With such a lengthy and complex procedure, many victims find it helpful to consult a Belleville or Edwardsville personal injury lawyer

TorHoerman Law notes that an experienced lawyer can streamline the process. This ensures you don’t have to spend months navigating bureaucracy, especially if you’ve been injured in the incident.

In Quebec, the issue is with high cost. The average cost of vehicle damage due to potholes is $256 per year, nearly double the Canadian average. The financial strain is even greater when medical costs from pothole-related accidents are factored in.

Whether in the U.S. or Canada, claiming compensation for pothole damage is a widespread issue. Drivers face slow and complicated legal processes.

FAQs

How does weather contribute to the formation of potholes?

Potholes are often formed due to the freeze-thaw cycle, which is common in colder climates. When water seeps into cracks in the road and freezes, it expands, causing the road surface to crack. When the ice melts, the road surface contracts, leaving behind gaps that eventually lead to potholes.

Does extreme heat in summer cause potholes as well?

Yes, extreme heat can also contribute to potholes, although it’s more of a secondary factor. During hot weather, roads expand and can soften, making them more vulnerable to damage from heavy vehicles. Repeated stress on soft spots can cause cracks, which worsen when temperatures drop and the freeze-thaw cycle starts.

How can cities mitigate pothole problems caused by weather?

Cities can reduce weather impact on roads through regular maintenance like crack sealing to prevent water seepage. Using higher-quality materials that withstand extreme temperatures and moisture can help minimize pothole severity. Improving drainage systems to prevent water buildup also plays a crucial role in reducing damage.

Uniting Through Shared Frustration

Canada and the U.S. may differ in climate and road conditions. However, the frustration over potholes unites drivers on both sides of the border. Whether navigating Montreal’s cratered streets or dodging Rhode Island’s infamous potholes, North American motorists are enduring a rough ride.

As cities grapple with the growing costs of road repairs, one thing is clear- potholes are here to stay. Drivers will need to continue dodging them until a more permanent solution is found.

Until then, the shared struggle of pothole-ridden roads continues to unite Americans and Canadians, one bump at a time.
