The borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is closely monitoring the levels and flows of the rivière des Prairies and has been mobilizing for several weeks now in order to be prepared in case of flooding, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In a proactive and preventive manner, the borough has equipped itself with new material resources necessary for the prompt and efficient management of possible floods, and has put in place prevention tools to raise public awareness in anticipation of the spring flood.
Pierrefonds-Roxboro shows great foresight
"Spring is starting to show its colors and light, and we are working behind the scenes in case
of eventual floods. We are already monitoring the hydrological situation and I can assure you
that we are ready. In the last few years, we have acquired expertise in managing floods, as
well as the pandemic. We are able to manage both crises in parallel with confidence",
declared the borough's mayor, Mr. Dimitrios (Jim) Beis, adding "Make sure you protect your
property and your families, we'll take care of the rest! Together, we can do it”.
Responsible, proactive and sustainable risks management
Year after year, the borough refines its field interventions for flooding by notably updating its
Special Response Plan and by setting up a monitoring committee that meets weekly.
In 2021, the borough also acquired new protective measures to improve its material
resources inventory and to optimize interventions on the field, in order to secure public infrastructures.
By improving the mitigation measures, we are not only improving the speed of installation,
which reduces the time of interventions by half and requires fewer human power, but we are
also increasing the level of protection while expanding the perimeter of the protected zones.
These mitigation measures are made of different materials, some of which can be adapted
and modulated according to the water levels of the river. Thanks to their ease of installation,
these measures also facilitate the recovery phase when the time comes to remove the
material, causing less damage to private and public property.
Many of these measures are reusable, having a useful life of more than 10 years, which
significantly reduces the ecological footprint related to the disposal of soiled sandbags at the end of each flood.
Citizens’ responsibilities: prepare yourself and be ready!
